I’m Ruth McAteer — a Careers Development Professional, educator, speaker, and advocate for inclusion.
I work at the intersection of careers education, global opportunity, and belonging. My focus is simple: helping people understand themselves, expand their horizons, and move towards meaningful, sustainable futures.
My Work
I support students, educators, and organisations to navigate education and career pathways in a way that is informed, inclusive, and globally aware.
My work includes:
- One-to-one career guidance using approaches like the Career Construction Interview
- Designing careers curricula grounded in evidence and international best practice
- Training educators and organisations in inclusive practice
- Public speaking and workshop delivery
- Building global networks that connect students with real-world pathways
Having lived and worked in both the UK and Malaysia, I bring a genuinely international perspective. I regularly collaborate with educators, universities, and industry professionals across the world — because careers education shouldn’t be limited by geography.
Inclusion & Belonging
Since losing my hearing in 2021, inclusion has become central to everything I do.
I now actively advocate for equity, accessibility, and belonging — not as abstract ideas, but as practical realities that shape how people learn, work, and participate.
As a JEDI-B (Justice, Equity, Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging) Director and consultant, I:
- Help organisations identify and remove invisible barriers
- Design inclusive learning and event experiences
- Train teams in Universal Design for Learning (UDL)
- Support culture change so people feel genuinely welcomed and valued
My work is grounded in lived experience as well as professional practice. I believe inclusion is not an “add-on” — it is fundamental to good education and good work.
My Approach
I don’t believe careers guidance is about telling people what job to do.
It’s about:
- Understanding who you are
- Recognising your strengths, values, and experiences
- Exploring what is possible — globally
- Making informed, confident decisions
I am particularly passionate about helping people discover opportunities they may never have considered — whether that’s alternative education routes, international pathways, or funded study options.
My Journey
My own career hasn’t been linear — and that’s exactly why I do this work.
I started in recruitment and events before training and working as an auditor and Chartered Accountant. After having children, I stepped away from that career and moved to Malaysia, where I became a full-time parent — still the most demanding role I’ve ever had.
During that time, I began volunteering in schools and discovered careers and higher education guidance. That experience changed everything.
I retrained, qualified as a Careers Development Professional, and built a career that brings together education, global opportunity, and advocacy.
What I Bring
- Evidence-based careers education that translates potential into real outcomes
- Inclusive learning design rooted in UDL principles
- Practical tools to improve access, equity, and belonging
- Global insight and professional networks
- Energy, empathy, and a deep commitment to doing this work well
Beyond My Work
I live in Malaysia with my husband and two children.
I’m a strong believer that careers are not just about work — they are about building a life that reflects who you are and what matters to you.
And if I can help someone find a pathway that truly fits them — that’s success.
